Calculate your Body Mass Index (BMI) and find your WHO classification (underweight, normal, overweight, obese). BMI is a quick screening tool that estimates body-fat-related health risk from height and weight.
Someone starting a fitness programme records a BMI of 27.4 in January. Rather than treating the label as a diagnosis, they log the figure monthly alongside waist measurement, because BMI on its own cannot tell muscle from fat.
By June the value is 25.1 while waist measurement dropped four centimetres — the pair of numbers together tells a clearer story than either alone, and gives the person something concrete to discuss with a doctor.
BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared: BMI = kg / m². Imperial inputs are converted first (1 lb = 0.453592 kg, 1 in = 0.0254 m) so both unit systems produce the same value.
The result is placed on the standard WHO adult categories: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5–24.9 normal, 25–29.9 overweight, 30 and above obese. Those bands are population-level statistics, not individual medical advice.
Known limitations are worth stating plainly: BMI ignores body composition, so muscular athletes score high, and it is not validated for children, pregnancy, or the elderly in the same way. Treat it as one signal among several.
Body-measurement options compared:
| Tool | How it works | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Body-fat scales (bioimpedance) | Estimate fat percentage from electrical resistance. | Cheap and convenient, but readings swing with hydration and time of day. |
| Waist-to-height ratio | Waist circumference divided by height. | Better predictor of metabolic risk, but needs a tape measure and consistent technique. |
| ToolZone BMI Calculator | Instant metric or imperial BMI with the WHO category. | A screening number only — it is not a medical assessment. |
BMI doesn't distinguish muscle from fat, so it overestimates body fat in muscular individuals. Pair it with waist circumference or body-fat percentage for a fuller picture.
The WHO normal range is 18.5–24.9. Below 18.5 is underweight; 25–29.9 overweight; 30+ obese.
