Title Case vs Sentence Case

Updated 2026-09-09 · 3 min read

The quick difference

Title case capitalizes the main words in a heading, while sentence case capitalizes only the first word and proper nouns. Both are useful; the best choice depends on where the text will appear.

When title case works best

Title case is common for book titles, course names, report titles, email subject lines, and some navigation labels. It gives a heading more weight, but it can feel heavy when every small label uses it.

When sentence case works best

Sentence case is easier to scan in app interfaces, help docs, dashboards, and forms. It feels closer to natural writing and reduces awkward capitalization decisions around short words such as 'to', 'for', and 'with'.

Developer naming cases

Code has its own conventions. JavaScript variables often use camelCase, React components use PascalCase, CSS classes and URLs often use kebab-case, and environment variables commonly use UPPER_SNAKE_CASE.

Frequently asked questions

Is title case better for SEO?

Not automatically. Search engines care more about clear, relevant wording than capitalization. Use the style that makes the title readable for humans.

What case should URLs use?

Lowercase kebab-case is the safest default for URLs because it is readable and avoids case-sensitive path surprises.

Should buttons use title case or sentence case?

Most modern app interfaces use sentence case for buttons and labels because it is calmer and easier to scan.
