How to Calculate Discount Price

Updated 2026-09-09 · 3 min read

The basic discount formula

To calculate a discount, multiply the original price by the discount percentage, then subtract that saving from the original price.

Example: 25% off $80

The saving is 80 * 25 / 100 = 20. The sale price is 80 - 20 = 60. If tax is 8%, the checkout total is 60 * 1.08 = 64.80.

Discount before tax

Most shops apply the discount first and calculate tax on the discounted subtotal. That is also the cleanest way to compare prices across stores because it separates the merchant discount from local tax rules.

Use the calculator

Open the Discount Calculator, enter the original price, discount percentage, and optional tax rate, then compare the real final price before buying.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate 30% off?

Multiply the price by 0.30 to get the saving, then subtract it from the original price.

Is 50% off twice the same as 100% off?

No. Two 50% discounts leave 25% of the original price, because the second discount applies to the already-discounted amount.
